iPhone 7 Plus: What’s New

The iPhone 7 Plus is Apple’s newest pinnacle in their family of mobile smartphones, and it has quite a few features that put it into a category of its own, even compared to the smaller iPhone 7. The best features of the iPhone 7 are all available on the 7 Plus, and it includes a few other amazing details that make it exceptional.

When comparing the iPhone 7 and the 7 Plus, the differences are quite obvious. The 7 Plus has a vastly improved camera over the 7, and it has longer battery life and a bigger screen. The camera for the iPhone 7 Plus is the first in the line of Apple phones to include a dual lens system. This gives the iPhone 7 Plus a true advantage over other phones of similar cost and utility.

Compared to older generations of the iPhone that came before the 7, the 7 Plus offers double the storage, new finishes to choose from, and even improved components on the inside of the device. Of course, the headphone jack has also been removed in favor of a single Lightning port, which can function as a headphone jack with an adapter.

Pricing

The iPhone 7 Plus was launched with three models, just like the majority of the iPhone lines that came before it. Users can select between three models based on their capacity, including 32GB, 128GB, and 256GB models. Those who are familiar with the iPhone 6 line will recognize these values are literally doubled from the iPhone 6 line.

As with most similar devices, the prices are determined by the capacity. The following is a brief outline of the prices for each model:

  • 32GB – $749
  • 128GB – $849
  • 256GB – $949

Architecture

In the past, newer iPhone models have been given an external makeover to coincide with their release, but the iPhone 7 Plus has taken a bit of a departure from that tradition. The 7 Plus is nearly identical in size to the 6S Plus, and they have the same thin frame and beveled edges. Interestingly, the two phones even have the exact same physical measurements. Physically, the only difference between the iPhone 7 Plus and the 6S Plus is the weight of the device, with the newer models weighing about 5 grams less.

The only way to truly distinguish the 7 Plus from the 6S Plus is the additional camera lens on the back of the device, but there are a number of ways to distinguish the two devices based on their utility and not their physical structure. In fact, the iPhone 7 Plus includes a new outer casing that is made to be dust-proof, splash-proof, and even directly waterproof.

One of the most notable changes to the physical structure of the iPhone 7 Plus is that the 3.5mm headphone port has been removed in favor of using wireless headphones or an adapter to plug wired headphones into the Lightning port. Removing the headphone port supposedly made the device thinner and improved battery life.

Users who purchase a new iPhone 7 Plus will receive a pair of wired headphones along with an adapter that connects standard headphones to the Lightning port. This allows the user to continue using their own standard headphones if they choose.

The 7 Plus also has seen a redesign when it comes to the classic antenna bands that Apple has had a hard time with over the years. They seem to constantly change the position of these bands in an attempt to find the optimal position, and it seems they may have finally done so with the iPhone 7 Plus. The bands are much harder to see if users select one of the darker finishes.

The new finishes for the iPhone 7 Plus include a Jet Black and standard Black option, and the Space Grey finish has been discontinued. The Jet Black finish comes with a glossy, shiny veneer, while the standard Black is more like a flat, coarse surface. Users can also select from Silver, Gold, and Rose Gold.

In terms of hardware, the 7 Plus also includes a new Home button that is no longer a physical button that can be clicked. Instead, the haptic feedback feature of the device uses pressure sensitivity to allow the user to take full advantage of the Home button. Users can now vary the pressure they use to press the Home button in order to access different utilities.

Camera

Many iPhone users have been disappointed with the progress of the camera system in the devices over the last several iterations, but hardcore photographers are finally getting what they have asked for. For the first time in an iPhone, the system includes two lens, which gives the phone the ability to perform both digital and optical zoom. Each of the two rear cameras has 12MP of resolution, and they can work in tandem to create an artificial telephoto effect.

This dual-lens camera will quickly propel the iPhone 7 Plus to a new level of quality, and it opens up a wide range of photography skills that were once completely impossible on an iPhone. Users will notice the phone can also defocus backgrounds, so images can be produced that match what might come from a DSLR.

While the iPhone 7 Plus isn’t the first phone to incorporate all these features, they are certainly to first to do so in a way that is fully comprehensive and refined to perfection. Apple should be quite proud of what they have achieved with their camera hardware.

Users will also notice the Camera app itself has been improved quite a bit, and the new zoom feature automatically transitions from optical to digital zoom. The newest features of the app have been seamlessly incorporated into what was already a stellar Camera app.

Display

There aren’t many other top-of-the-line phones with the same premium display as the iPhone 7 Plus. It has a display with a diagonal measurement of 5.5 inches, and it has a high-resolution pixel display that can deliver up to 1080p of clarity. The Retina display that Apple has been using for several versions of the iPhone has been improved for the 7 Plus.

There certainly are larger smartphone screens on the market, but it is hard for those to match the premium quality of the 7 Plus. Apple took the display a step further with the 7 Plus and actually bonded the screen to the glass surface of the display, which allows the phone to produce more colors than it ever could.

The introduction of the new Wide Color Gamut also means the phone can produce even more colors. In order to take advantage of this, the contrast ratio of the display has also been improved.

Battery

The battery within the iPhone 7 Plus has been improved from the older models also. The 7 Plus boasts an additional hour of potential battery life compared to the iPhone 6S Plus, and this is most likely attributed to the new processing chip used by the iPhone 7 Plus. The new A10 chip conserves power since it includes the graphic processor within the chip architecture.

Some experts argue the battery within the iPhone 7 Plus is actually identical to the battery in the 6S Plus, but they say the difference comes from the fact that the iPhone 7 Plus is much more efficient.

Entertainment

It is fairly clear that Apple is hoping to regain control of the music and entertainment mediums most commonly used in society thanks to the exclusion of the headphone jack in the new iPhone 7 Plus, as well as the inclusion of a new second output speaker. Standard 3.5mm headphone ports have a limit on the quality of the audio they can deliver, but the Lightning port that will be the new standard can handle quite a bit more.

The second output speaker also boosts the total volume for the device, and it gives the device the ability to produce sound in stereo. One speaker is on one end of the device, while the second is on the opposite end. This means the music produced by the iPhone 7 Plus will be less directional and more all-encompassing than older models.

Conclusion

While there are a few notable upgrades from the older models, the iPhone 7 Plus is essentially a redesigned version of the most recent iPhone, the 6S Plus. The main appealing factors of the iPhone 7 Plus are the new camera system and the expanded storage options.

The waterproof surface is also quite attractive to buyers, and the sound improvement is nothing to ignore. Users moving from the iPhone 6S Plus might find little difference, but other users will see marked improvements over older models.
